Long ago the site of many active lava flows, Lava Beds National Monument now contains dozens of hardened flows ranging from the two-million-year-old Gillem Bluff volcanic tuff to the 1,100-year-old Callahan Flow basalt. In some places, hollowed out flows have formed natural caves, and there are hundreds of various shapes and sizes throughout the park. At the Big Painted Cave, pictographs from civilizations that lived nearby centuries and even millennia ago. Miles of trails lead to the park's great variety of sights, and there are campgrounds to more easily accommodate a multi-day adventure. Hidden away on nearly the northern edge of the state where it meets Oregon, the park is close to the Lower Kalamath Lake but not very near any large towns or cities.
Open 24 hours daily. Visitor center open daily Memorial Day - Labor Day: 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.; Labor Day - Memorial Day: 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
